What Plumbing Maintenance Should You Do Before Winter to Avoid Claims?

winter woodsWith winter approaching, homeowners need to consider options to protect their homes. You may know that you need to check the roof to ensure there are no leaks. You may have spent some time ensuring the windows are tightly sealed. But, have you thought about the plumbing?

A common type of home insurance claim has to do with plumbing failures. What’s more, not all types of plumbing problems can be home insurance claims. That’s why it is so important for you to protect your plumbing.

What You Need to Do

There are various steps you can take to ensure your home’s plumbing is working properly. It may not take much time or effort to do this now, but it can save you money down the road. Start with these tips:

Cut the risk of clogged drains. To do this, you’ll want to ensure your drains are flowing at the proper speed. You can also have your drain lines cleaned by a professional at least one time a year. This could help you to save a large amount of money from a single repair. Do this for all major drains in your home and your main line.

Consider those pipelines. Insulating them is not hard to do. It can be one of the best steps you can take for reducing the risk of the pipes freezing. When pipes freeze, this often leads to the risk of a pipe bursting, flooding your basement and your home.

Head outdoors, too. Do not forget your outdoor spigots and running water. These lines connect to your home’s main water lines as well. It’s important to ensure these lines do not leak and that they do not have any exposure to breakage.

By taking these steps, you can lessen the risk that you’ll have water leaks during the winter months. Your home insurance can help cover some of these losses, depending on the cause. However, it is always safer and more effective to keep your plumbing systems working properly instead.
